This African Jesus exhibits finely carved features. Depicting a black Jesus with his head leaning to one side, wearing a crown of thorns and with his arms outstretched on the cross. Carved from one piece of a heavy dark wood with a deep worn surface patina as a result of touching and handling over time.
Makonde families would commission talented craftsmen to create such religious figures, which would sometimes be given as gifts or kept in households to serve as spiritual protection.
