The upright back support of this fine nineteenth-century chair features a cut-out cross design, typically found among similarly high-backed chairs from this western region of Ethiopia. The chair, carved from a single piece of wood, exhibits a beautiful classical form, with a worn surface patina throughout.
High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among cultures from the central and western regions of Ethiopia - serving as symbols of rank and title during meetings by the council of elders.
