This beautifully carved pendant mask depicts the head of a buffalo, with a pair of curved horns. The buffalo is shown with an X-shaped marking along its jaw, and with ring-shaped, protruding eyes – a feature typically found on masks from this region.
The pendant mask, which would have been worn as a protective pendant by the Bobo and Bwa people of Burkina Faso, shows good signs of use, with a dark surface patina.
