This Makonde figure, depicting Jesus on the cross, exhibits beautifully carved features. The upper half of the figure is exaggerated in size, and the surface of the figure exhibits a lovely worn patina as a result of touching and handling over time.
Makonde individuals and families would commission talented craftsmen to create such religious figures, which would sometimes be given as gifts and kept in households to serve as spiritual protection.
