This African Madonna figure from Southern Tanzania, close to the border of Mozambique, bears a stern but serene expression. She stands in an upright-slightly leaning - posture, and wears long, flowing robes. Her arms rest by her sides, and her palms are upturned.
Madonna figures such as this would have been kept in private dwellings and houses, serving as protective forces. Carved from a dense wood, the surface of this African Madonna exhibits a lovely deep, worn patina as a result of extensive touching and handling over the years.
Estimated Period: First Quarter of 20th Century
