Bambara Animal Mask

Mali

Animal Mask. Bambara Culture, Mali

This fine animal mask, depicting a hyena with a wonderful primal expression, comes from the Bambara culture of Mali. The mask exhibits an eroded, weathered surface. These features are probably what drew its previous owner, artist Josef Herman, to this piece.

Note the photo of artist Josef Herman in his London studio, with the Bambara animal mask hanging on the top right of the wall, above the painting.

Ex Josef Herman Collection, UK
