The rabbit, characterised as smart and agile, often appears among the animal masks of the Makonde. This fine Makonde mask has been carved into the shape of a rabbit or wild hare, with an open mouth and large, upright ears. The whitened kaolin face of the animal is framed by the darkened surface of the wood, and features a pair of dried beeswax whiskers. The back of the mask exhibits a well-used, worn surface patina.
