This fine animal mask, depicting a hyena has a wonderful primal expression. The surface of the mask exhibits an eroded, weathered surface. These primal and eroded features may be what originally drew the previous owner, the famous artist Josef Herman, to the piece.
Note the photo of Josef Herman in his London studio in the 1980's, with the Bambara animal mask hanging on the top right of the wall, above the painting.
