This comb incorporates a finely carved female bust with wide, alert eyes, a slightly upturned mouth, and prominent facial scarification markings beneath each cheek. The figure is crowned by an intricate coiffure, and the front of the comb features a woman's breasts. Both sides of the comb are adorned a series of striation decorations.
In Ghana, elaborate combs such as this were gifted from Akan men to Akan women to commemorate special events, such as puberty celebrations, weddings, or births.
