Tortoise Shell Hand Shield. Dinka Culture, Southern Sudan

 

This small tortoise carapace hand shield would have been a prestige item owned by a Dinka warrior. The naturally-patterned and textured tortoise shell has been attached to a bamboo shaft, and mounted onto a finely forged iron blade.
