Laguru Figure

Tanzania

Female Fetish Figure. Laguru Culture, Tanzania

This female figure is depicted standing in an upright position, with her hands resting on her lower abdomen. Carved with slender proportions, the figure exhibits a stylistically exaggerated, elongated form. A defining feature of this piece is a pronounced fetish hole, (as shown in the images) located at the figure's rear.

The positioning of the hands, and the proximity between the fetish hole and navel, suggests the figure’s role as a fertility fetish.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century (1940’s– 1950’s)
