Laguru Figure

Tanzania

Female Fetish Figure. Laguru Culture, Tanzania

This female fetish figure is depicted standing in an upright position, with her hands resting on her lower abdomen. Carved with slender proportions, this female figure exhibits a stylistically attractive exaggerated, elongated form. A defining feature of this piece is a pronounced fetish hole, located at the figure's rear.

The positioning of the hands, and the proximity between the fetish hole and navel, are suggestive of the figure’s possible role in fertility rituals.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century (1940’s– 1950’s)
