Kulango Figure

Ivory Coast

Fine Female Figure. Kulango Culture, Northern Ivory Coast

This female figure stands in an upright position, her head adorned with a flat, crescent-shaped coiffure. The figure exhibits wonderfully executed abstract body characteristics, from a sharply pointed chin to the connection between the figure’s breasts and arms – which unusually have been carved in reverse. The placement of the figure’s breasts at the upper arms and shoulders is unusual.

The figure exhibits a beautifully dark glossy surface, and delicately engraved, simplistic shapes and lines define the figure's facial features. A finely beaded girdle, consisting of old glass beads and cowrie shells, has been wrapped around the figure's hips.
