This fetish figure depicting an embracing couple would have been traditionally kept in a Wagogo household as a symbol of togetherness and the relationship between husband and wife. The male figure rests his arm on the female’s shoulder, and the female wraps her arm around the male’s back. The figures stand in a proud, powerful stance with accentuated upper shoulders.
The body of each figure has been wrapped in cloth, and the female wears a necklace made from glass fragments and tiny transparent beads. An early restoration, in which the figures have been bound together with plastic coated wire, ironically serves to further underscore the ‘togetherness’ of the fetish figure. The figures also bear a resemblance to the artistic style of figurative art from Madagascar.
