A kneeling female figure, crowned with a sweeping double-parted coiffure, surmounts this fine Kwere spoon. The figure is depicted holding her breasts in a gesture of maternity, and Swahili designs - similar to those found on household items along the Tanzanian coast - adorn the handle of the spoon.
The surface of spoon has developed a nice patina in areas where it would have been held - namely, the handle as well as the arms and breasts of the figure. Among the Kwere, pieces such as this would have been commissioned and possibly given as gifts to commemorate a special occasion, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
