FINE EARLY TRADITIONAL MEDICINE CONTAINER

Kaguru, Tanzania. £950

Fine Early Horn and Wooden Traditional Medicine Container. Kaguru Culture, Tanzania

The animal horn body of this traditional medicine container is surmounted with a beautifully executed carved wooden stopper, representing a female figure. The figure is depicted supporting a pot that she balances on her head with one hand, and with her other arm resting at her side. Attached to the container is a fibre handle, which has been threaded through a hole located at the top of an accompanying wooden implement probably used to scrape medicine from inside the horn container. The surfaces of the container and the wooden stopper exhibit a very worn, oily, smooth patina.
