FINE FIGURATIVE FLUTES

Bamileke, Cameroon. £2200

Two Fine Wooden Flutes. Bamileke Culture, Cameroon

These two fine flutes exhibit a wonderful interplay of geometric and abstract figurative forms. A pair of raised striations feature on the head of what can be interpreted as the 'male' figurative flute on the right, while the geometric shape of the other on the left appears to be an abstracted representation of a female coiffure.  A strip of snake skin has been wrapped around its body. Each has a deep worn shinny patina.

Hung around the neck by strands of leather, these flutes would have been played in ceremonies by Bamileke musicians and traditional hunters.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century (1930’s)

Left: Ex Jan Lundberg Collection, Sweden

Right: Ex Private Collection, Belgium

Height: 30cm
