Carved from a hard heavy wood this post has developed and beautiful rich patina from touching and handling over time. Such posts, or markers, would have been placed inside a traditional Gurage house and used to separate living spaces inside the dwelling for example separating the sleeping area from the more formal meeting and greeting area. Also separating the area where the live stock were kept over night. The circular head of the post acted as a symbolic protection symbol to the household.
