FINE PAIR OF STAFF HANDLES

Kikuyu, Kenya. £1800

Beautifully Carved Pair of Staff Handles. Kikuyu Culture, Kenya

Carved from the same hand depicting a male and a female in an upright stance. Each figure has been finely executed showing fantastic detail and craftmanship. The female is adorned with multiple stands of early glass beads around her waste, she stands with one hand placed between her breasts and the other by her side. The male stands stiff upright with his arms by his side. There is an early chain around his neck and in each ear are small aluminium studs.

It is thought that these pieces were once fly-wisp handles and thus probably owned my a Kamba man of higher rank.
