Carved from a single piece of dense, very heavy wood, this low-set table or seat features a flat, circular top with a detailed, decorative rim. Bearing the weight of this flat top are three figures - two women and a bearded man. Standing in a crouched position with both arms resting on their stomachs, the figures stylistically exhibit Southern African features of figurative art from this region but it is not know exactly which region this piece originates from. It was more than likely commissioned for the early colonial market. Adorning the smooth-surfaced circular top are a series of nine encircled floral-like designs with shell inlay, providing further ornamentation to the top's intricately carved rim.
