Sukuma Figure

Tanzania

Fine Male Figure. Sukuma Culture, Tanzania

This male figure is depicted standing in an upright stance, bearing a powerful facial expression with inserted aluminium eyes and a set of metal teeth. A leather band is wrapped around the figure’s neck. Carved without arms, which is typical with such figures, the body has been painted red in order to emphasise its presence.

The eroded feet of the figure suggest it was originally placed beneath a protective shelter, acting as a guardian figure.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century
