This fine Sukuma figure has an amazing powerful primal expression with inserted aluminium eyes and a set of metal teeth. A leather band is wrapped around the figure’s neck. Carved without arms, which is typical with such dance or guardian figures, the body has been painted red in order to emphasise its presence.
The eroded feet of the figure suggest that after ceremonial use the figure was placed beneath a protective shelter, acting also as a guardian figure.
