This mask comes from the Makonde in Mozambique. A large, protruding lip adornment has been carved into the mask itself. The forehead region of the mask has been covered with a patch of animal-hide.
The mask’s original leather straps are located to the rear. The surface of this Makonde mask exhibits a weathered worn surface patina as a result of age and use.
