This Chewa mask from Malawi previously belonged to Walter Hekster, a famous Dutch musician and composer who had a keen interest in tribal art from Tanzania and the surrounding region. The mask has been carved from a light wood, and features a wonderful, wrinkled expression.
The pronounced wrinkle lines on the forehead extend down to the cheeks, and rows of decorative dots adorn the top of the mask. The surface of the mask exhibits signs of extensive use.
