The refined facial features of this zakpai mask - from its rounded eyes and accentuated cheekbones to its protruding open mouth - are reflections of beauty in the Dan culture of the Ivory Coast. The mask exhibits a smooth, dark chocolate surface, and a vertical 'scar' in relief runs down the centre of the forehead. As a result of use, the back of the mask has developed a good, worn patina.
