This fine Makonde Mapiko mask was collected in the early 1960s by an expat working in Mozambique. The mask was subsequently kept in his private collection in Oxford, England.
The mask has been carved from alight balsa wood, and decorated with yellow pigments. The face features a lip adornment, and is decorated with striking markings representative of typical Makonde facial tattoos.
