It is not exactly know the traditional use of these old iron sandals but it is thought that they may have been placed in a Dogon cave with the purpose that they would aid with the transition to the ancestral after life. They may also have been connected in a ritual purpose to the Hogon. The surface is deeply corroded from age and being exposed to the natural elements.
