In 1944, this mask was collected in the Kikongo region of the DRC by an English expat who worked as an employee of Unilever Co. and was stationed in the surrounding palm oil plantations. It was then brought to the UK in the 1950's, where it remained in a private family collection until the present day.
The photograph of a group of masked dancers was taken in 1944 by the above mentioned expat, and shows a dancer who, in all likelihood, wears this mask (as marked in the photograph). A second photograph of the masked dancers which was taken around the same time features another mask (the Mbala Mask),which has also been highlighted in the photograph. As a result of the image's higher definition, it is possible to concretely identify this mask. It is considered that both masks were collected after these field photographs were taken.
