Azande hats, of any form, are rare on the market. Strands of plant fibre have been plaited and woven to create this fine Azande prestige hat, consisting of a square-shaped top with four prominent corners.
Early published examples of similar forms of hats have been attributed to the Mangbetu; the neighbouring culture of the Azande in the north eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A beautiful wavy pattern, created from woven strands of darker natural fibre, decorates the rim of the hat.
