Ceremonial Helmet

Kirdi, Cameroon

4.  Ceremonial Helmet. Kirdi Culture, Cameroon

This rare ceremonial helmet was collected in the 1980s by two doctors, Karl and Tina Hofer, when they worked in the Cameroon Grasslands. The helmet, crafted from iron, is adorned with a hammered and dotted surface pattern. This form of dot decoration typically also appears on iron shields from the same area, namely, the northern region of Cameroon. The helmet is surmounted by a bird motif, and features two strands of locally-made linked chain attachments, which would have hung as decoration.
