Set of Fine Wooden Panels/Doors

Nupe, Nigeria

Set of Three Fine Wooden Panels/Doors. Nupe Culture, Nigeria

A series of animal motifs depicting oxen, lizards, turtles, snakes, camels, birds and fish beautifully decorate these panels, together with an array of geometric designs. Carved representations of household objects, from knives to a Koranic writing board, are documented in the wood.

One of the panels - the piece to the right - acted as a movable door (note the cut-out hinged sections to the top and bottom), with the other panels fastened together with cross-sections of wood. The decorations have been carved in relief, and the surface of the panels have developed a darker colour due to smoke and use over time.

The panels are an original group of three, as seen through the continuation of the zigzag decoration at the bottom of each panel. This motif is the artist's signature, which links the panels together.

Estimated Period: First Quarter 20th Century
