Rare Form Of Stool

Nupe, Nigeria. £640

Fine Early Stool. Nupe Culture, Nigeria

This rare small-sized Nupe stool has been carved from one piece of wood into an attractive double-tiered structure. Its complex form consists of a low-set stool on top of a larger-sized stool, buttressed by a pattern of alternating curved legs and vertical supporting stilts. Carved geometric decorations consisting of triangular and linear shapes adorn the rim of each tiered seat, as well as the surface of the four supporting stilts. Over time, the surface of the stool has developed a deep worn patina.

Estimated Period: Early 20th Century (Or Before)
