TORTOISE SHELL BELL

Northern Uganda. £550

Rare Type of Animal Charm. Karamajong Culture, Northern Uganda

Made from the shell of a tortoise this piece would have acted both as a bell and a charm and was only worn by a head bull in the heard.

Worn around the neck, no other animal would have had the privilege to wear such a rare adornment. Inside the shell are two wooden hanging pieces that would rattle when the shell was moved. Attached to the shell is a finely woven thick leather strap that would have fastened securely around the animals neck.
