This unusual fetish captures the form of an animal called in Swahili 'Kicheche'. It is often found in the coastal region of East Africa but it is not known for certain if it is also found in other inland regions. A timid, cat-sized animal that can often only be seen at night, it usually feeds in a pack and preys on domestic animals such as chickens.
The fetish has been cleverly created from a small tree root with its long bent tail and four legs. It is bound with cloth, which is barely visible due to the encrusted surface patina that has developed on top. It has a fetish hole on its back to empower the figure, but it is not known in what type of ritual such a fetish was used. Animals are frequently used as healing fetishes in this region of Tanzania - no doubt this animal captures the symbols of agility and cunningness.
