The sculptural form of this Congolese basket consists of a dense, tightly woven wicker fibre structure, composed from two parts. The lid of the basket - crowned with a finial-like form - tightly fits onto the tapering base at the raised central perimeter.
Removing the lid reveals the masterfully-woven coiled structure of the basket, resulting in an interior of alternating, spiralling bands of darker and lighter coloured wicker fibre.
