Woven Bark Panels

Mbole, DRC

Group of Three Woven Bark Fibre Decorative Panels. 1930’s. Mbole Culture, DRC

Woven panels such as this would have decorated the walls of a Mbole meeting house. This group of three decorative panels are made from woven bark fibre, which has been decorated with striking geometric designs.

The dark-coloured strands of fibre, used to create the bold abstract decorations against a pale back ground, have been dyed with the roots of the banana tree.

This group of Mbole panels have been mounted on a custom-made mount. Each panel is unique.

Ex Private Collection, Belgium (Brussels)

Estimated Period: 1930s
