17th/18th Century Bronze Gold Weight Depicting a Royal Stool. Akan Culture, Ghana

This seventeenth-century bronze gold weight depicts an Akan royal stool. Cast by Akan goldsmiths, small gold weights (mrammou) such as this were used to weigh gold dust - the currency of the Akan and potent symbol of kra (life-force) - between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.
