£150 Each

19th Century Almond-Shaped Bronze Gold Weight Containers (Abamphruwa). Akan Culture, Ghana

These two almond-shaped lidded containers (abamphruwa) were cast to hold gold dust, the currency of the Akan peoples of Ghana. The containers’ flat lids are each secured by an inner vertical ridge, that fits into the opening of the box. Linear patterns decorate the lower base of the containers, and their lids are ornamented with bands of closely-packed raised parallel lines, which alternate between registers of interlocking chain-like patterns.
