A wonderful cast miniature bronze caricature of a horse and rider. Such pieces termed (Putchu Guinadji), sometimes found wrapped, stitched and encased in leather, had a traditional function acting as a protective charm from harmful spirits. The casting represents a Kotoko rider, sitting proudly upright on his horse, wearing a traditional hat and holding round shields in both arms. The image of the horse and rider recalls a broader history of mounted warfare and exchange throughout the greater Sahel Region of West Africa.
