A Karamojong headrest, fashioned from a single piece of slender wood. Carved, steamed and bent to create its elegant, flowing form. Two gracefully curved uprights support the upper rest and are secured with metal wire, which also serves as a practical carrying handle.
Among the Karamojong people of Uganda, headrests were both functional and deeply personal possessions. Used to support the head while resting or sleeping, they helped preserve elaborate hairstyles and protected the wearer from direct contact with the ground.
A fine example with a beautiful worn shinney patina acquired through age and use.
