The surface on one side of this fantastic nineteenth-century Igbo ankle adornment (ogba) has been decorated with a rich array of finely engraved designs, consisting of circles, dots, lines and triangular formations. Splits that appear on the surface have been meticulously traditionally restored with small pieces of metal and rivets, an indication of the importance placed on such a adornment. There is a crack that appears (approx. 7cm long) where the cuff joins the flatted disc, this was likely as a result when the adornment was being removed. Skilfully forged from brass, the exceptional size of this 'ogba' was indicative of the wearer’s high-ranking position in her society.
