A finely carved ceremonial spoon from the Kaguru culture of Tanzania, distinguished by its elegant form. The handle is carved as a standing female figure with elongated proportions, her hands resting gently on either side of her abdomen. A small cavity at the navel, intended to hold a protective or ritual substance, reflects the spoons ceremonial importance. The oval spoon bowl displays a smooth, worn surface , while at the opposite end terminates in a flat, paddle-shaped extension, allowing the piece to function as both a serving spoon and a stirring implement.
Ceremonial spoons of this type were traditionally commissioned as marriage gifts and were often passed from mother to daughter.
