In 1944, this mask was collected in the Kikongo region of the DRC by an English expat who worked as an employee of Unilever Company and who was stationed with his wife in the surrounding palm oil plantations between 1936-1951. It was then brought to the UK in the 1950's, where it remained in the family collection until recent times. The photograph, as shown on the slide show, of a group of masked dancers was taken in July 1944 by the above mentioned expat, and shows a group of dancers, one wearing this mask (as marked with a white circle, the kaolin has now largely faded).
This information was provided by the family of the couple mentioned above. The original photograph that was taken in July 1944 accompanies the sale of this mask.
