Large in size, this Kaguru comb has been finely carved, surmounted by two female figures sitting back-to-back with their arms resting by their sides.
The surface of the body of the comb has a worn and dark patina and has been decorated by a series of circle and zigzag designs. Tiny white glass beads denote the figures eyes and below each are unusual tear-dot-like decorations.
Combs like this were often commissioned and given as a gift during traditional wedding ceremonies and there after kept as a dowery. This tradition follows many cultures along the length Tanzanian coast.
