The figure stands upright, the shoulders are hunched and its head leans forward with a downward gaze. The ears are exaggerated in size and this together with its unusual posture gives this sculpture its unique character and presence. The body of the figure has been wrapped in strips of cloth, now showing a dry and encrusted surface as a result from years of handling and traditional use.
The surface of the head has a dark, slightly glossy patina. The figure holds a wooden fetish object with an opening in its hands and positioned at the top of its head is a cavity holding remnants of dried fetish material.
The Shambaa (or Sambaa) and related cultures in the Usambara Mountains of North Eastern Tanzania are well known for their strong practise in traditional healing and the use during rituals of wrapped figures like this fine,powerful example.
