Vuvi masks from Gabon were inspired by their neighbours, the Mitsogho, and are know for their white pigments, flat profile, elongated form and fine features. This fine Vuvi mask captures beautifully all these characteristics. The fine facial markings with the simple line running down from the mouth to the pointed raw, together with its sweeping brows and pierced eyes, all combine to give this piece its unique expression.
White face masks a typical to the peoples of Gabon. This mask comes from an area of mixed influences and styles located among the Vuvi and their neighbours, the Mitsogho. However this mask with its flat profile and distinct long pointed chin is more related to the Vuvi people. Worn as a dance mask, such masks were used in connection with the spirit 'Mukuji'. They were worn by Mukuji society members and were mainly performed during funeral ceremonies.
