HEAD ADORNMENT WITH WARTHOG TEETH. GURUNSI/MOSSI, BURKINA FASO

Fine Rare Head Adornment. Gurunsi/Mossi Culture or Related Ethnic Group, Burkina Faso

This striking, rare ceremonial head adornment comprises two extraordinary large, beautifully sweeping sections of warthog, or possibly hippopotamus, teeth. Impressive in size and form, this head adornment would originally have been worn by male musicians or warriors during festivals associated with  hunting and war. Across northern Ghana and Burkina Faso, horned helmets are worn by the Gurunsi, Mossi, Konkomba and related ethnic groups.
