A comparatively large example of a 'Putchu Guinadji'. The varied surface patina indicates that this piece was likely once wrapped and bound in leather, hence the darker redish colouring in various parts. The lighter worn bronze surface was where the piece was not wrapped and exposed to handling and touching over time. Such pieces had a traditional function acting as a protective charm from harmful spirits. The casting represents a horse and rider, recalling over time a broad history of mounted warfare throughout the greater Sahel Region.
