Madonna and Child – Likely Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
A beautifully carved Madonna and Child sculpture, attributed to a Luba artist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, displaying the elegance and refined craftsmanship for which Luba carving is renowned.
The Madonna is portrayed standing gracefully, holding the Christ Child before her in a tender and devotional pose. Both figures exhibit finely modelled facial features, balanced proportions, and the serene expression characteristic of Luba sculpture. Traces of original red pigment remain on the flowing robes, enriching the surface with warmth and contrast.
Christian devotional sculptures such as this represent a fascinating fusion of European religious iconography and Central African artistic traditions.
