With her slightly bowed head and downcast eyes, this Makonde Madonna exhibits a graceful, serene facial expression. Clothed in a long robe, the Madonna’s upright position emphasises her slender form, in which her arms are placed firmly at her sides. Her proportionally enlarged palms are upturned, and her toes are visible beneath her garment. Draping over her shoulders, the Madonna’s carved head covering touches the circular base that she stands on. As a result of handling over time, this piece has developed a beautiful worn surface patina.
