A large example (possibly one of the largest) of this type of rare 19th Century Kru ankle adornment. Cast as one piece in bronze with fine raised decorations on the surface. The hollow body acts as a bell with the cuff worn on the ankle as a prestige piece and only during ceremonial occasions. It is also thought that these objects had a sacred or magical significance, the important role of the blacksmith in traditional societies is central to this belief. The heavy weight of the piece (approx. 7 kg) would make it impossible to wear for any length of time.
Condition: Original casting cracks as shown in images to one side.
