Bao, the Swahili word for ‘board game’, is played throughout Eastern and Central Africa. Other regions of Africa have differing configurations of rows on the game boards. This game board, which consists of two rows of eight cups with a ‘storage’ cup located at the centre of each row, is typical of those found in Tanzania. Over time, the surface of this game board from Tanzania has developed a deep, worn patina especially on the edges of each cup.
